Derek V. Town graduated from Jordan-Elbridge in 1997. Wearing the number 76 jersey, Derek was a key member of J-E's championship football team in 1996. Derek went on to play football for SUNY Brockport before passing away from a rare form of brain cancer in 2003.
The Spirit of 76 is awarded each season to the football player from each team who emulates the dedication, team spirit, sportsmanship, and Eagle pride that Derek played with. In 2007 the first Spirit of 76 award was given to a cheerleader, a tradition that will continue. Each recipient receives a trophy and registration for the following season, compliments of the Derek Town Memorial Committee. |
